Review: 99 Days (Katie Cotugno)

Day 1: Julia Donnelly eggs my house my first night back in Star Lake, and that’s how I know everyone still remembers everything—how I destroyed my relationship with Patrick the night everything happened with his brother, Gabe. How I wrecked their whole family. Now I’m serving out my summer like a jail sentence: Just ninety-nine days till I can leave for college, and be done.

Day 4: A nasty note on my windshield makes it clear Julia isn’t finished. I’m expecting a fight when someone taps me on the shoulder, but it’s just Gabe, home from college and actually happy to see me. “For what it’s worth, Molly Barlow,” he says, “I’m really glad you’re back.”

Day 12: Gabe got me to come to this party, and I’m actually having fun. I think he’s about to kiss me—and that’s when I see Patrick. My Patrick, who’s supposed to be clear across the country. My Patrick, who’s never going to forgive me.
Infuriating . That is one word to describe Molly Barlow and the majority of the characters in this book.

As a love triangle story, it works. Even if I do not like one of the brothers. The other one seems great, but I’m not sure of his motives really.

But the thing that just ruined this story for me was Molly. And when the main character ruins the story, there isn’t a whole lot of hope left. She has to be one of the most selfish characters ever. She makes nothing but bad decisions. I don’t even think there is a good one sprinkled in to redeem her. It is just a series of stupid choices and ugly fallouts from beginning to end.

She does (sort of) grow up and come to terms with her bad choices at the end, but then the story ends and you never really know what happens next. You assume she goes off to college and starts over not being so stupid, but it’s not confirmed. It just kind of ends and leaves you hanging a bit.
